This recipe calls for a 9×13″ pan. Using a square one could work, except that you might have to make some slight modifications, since each layer would be much thicker/deeper, and I’m not sure if you would have enough depth to create layers using all six boxes of Jell-O. You might need to cut back to 3-4 boxes, depending on how deep your pan is. Either a glass or a metal pan should technically work just fine, although using a clear glass pan has more “WOW” factor, since people can see the pretty layers you’ve created. Hope that helps! 😀 ~Shelley

‘Does it matter if it is a metal or glass dish?

Hi, Brittney! Gretchen is no longer with our blog (so I’m trying to step in to help answer your question about her recipe). I know in the text of this post she mentions that she subbed the Greek yogurt for the sour cream her Grandma used. Hope that helps! Happy holidays! ~Shelley

I’m not sure i want to use greek yogurt so I’m looking for an option to replace that. Thanks

Hi Jennifer! I’m so happy you liked this recipe! I remember when she was first testing this healthier Greek yogurt version of this layered Jell-O recipe, how surprised Gretchen was that her family (who’d eaten her Grandma’s original version sooooooo many times) didn’t even notice a difference. Isn’t it awesome when you can give a classic recipe a little nutritional upgrade … and nobody can even tell?!? 😀 Now – regarding the layers … Gretchen has left our blog to become a teacher, so she’s not actively involved here anymore. And, this is really her recipe and all of her testing. I’m trying to remember back to the day we photographed, and how she created the layers, and I may need to run this question past her if I can, to get the best answer. The one thing I do notice in our photos is that, with fewer colors, the red-white-and-blue jello definitely does have a more noticeable difference in the height of the cloudy layers vs. the clear layers. My initial thought is that, when you use the full rainbow of colors like we did in the other photos, there is just such an incrementally small difference that it’s less noticeable. Before I check in with Gretchen – can you tell me how many different colors you used? That might help me get your question answered. Thanks so much! And thank you, too, for stopping by to tell me how much you liked the recipe – these types of notes from readers really make my day! 😀 ~Shelley

This turned out amazingly well! My only issue is that when written in the directions…I’m not sure how your layers were even. 1/2 cup of solid color jello vs 1/2 cup left over solid jello plus 1/2 cup Greek yogurt makes the Greek yogurt layer thicker. Overall, the taste is great and will make again!

Hi Alexis! Don’t worry about the directions on the Jell-O box – just follow along with our directions and amounts and it should all work out just perfectly for you. Thanks so much! ~Shelley

I was looking at the instructions on the box of the Jello and it says that to prepare it, I should use 1 cup of boiling water AND 1 cup of cold water. If I do this, Is 1/2 cup of yogurt still enough for the creamy Jello? Thank you!
