~ These non-alcoholic Halloween Punch recipes are perfect for school parties, office gatherings, non-drinkers and designated drivers. Hauntingly delicious big-batch drink ideas, with lots of spooky add-ins and decorating suggestions to make your gathering the most spook-tacular ever! ~

Collage of 4 recipe pictures with text overlay reading "10 Non-Alcoholic Halloween Punch Recipes Easy Spooky Fun".

When you’re spearheading a big gathering like a ghoulish Halloween party, it can be a hosting-hassle to have to be constantly making up individual beverages.

Luckily, party punch recipes are ideal for making up in large amounts, to let the guests serve themselves all throughout the event. (And let the host get away from manning the beverage station.)

But for Halloween, no ordinary punch recipes will do!

Nope! For this most bone-chilling of holidays, you want autumn flavors like apple or pumpkin, colorful themes like monster green and blood red, and of course plenty of eerie touches like floating eyeballs or blood-red oozing drips.

Whether you’re hosting a kids’ party or want a non-alcoholic drink option for the adults – or both! – these recipes will keep the party rolling deliciously, while freeing the host to leave the drinks station and enjoy the fun with everybody else!

Pro Tips for Party-Perfect Punch

And after you check out the recipes, be sure to hop down to the end of this article, to check out some top tips for making your Halloween Punch as easy – and festive – as can be!

But first … the recipes ……

Party-Perfect, EASY Non-Alcoholic Halloween Punch Recipes

Perfect for larger gatherings like kids' parties, office celebrations, trick-or-treat beverage stations, and school parties, these non alcoholic Halloween punch recipes are easy to make and so much fun to drink!

You’ve probably noticed lots of handy little tips and great ideas along the way, as you scrolled through all the recipes above.

But here’s a handy guide to some simple strategies to make your Halloween party punch station easy for the host, and a monstrous hit with all your guests!

Tips for a Spooky, EASY Non-Alcoholic Halloween Punch

  • Choosing a large punch bowl with a pedestal to elevate it (or even a big trifle bowl) is a great way to turn your delicious drink into an eye-catching central showpiece. If your bowl doesn’t have a pedestal footer, you can work a little magic by setting it on something like a sturdy, overturned wooden box in order to provide extra height. Drape the box in Halloween-themed fabric to help it fit seamlessly with the rest of your decor.
  • A large cauldron can also be a fun choice, instead of a typical punch bowl. It 100% promises that a witch’s brew waits inside! Oooooooh … so wicked!
  • Have plenty of cups or glasses nearby – more than you think you’ll need, since a few will undoubtedly get misplaced throughout the party, so some guests will end up using more than one. Providing adhesive name tags or drink charms can help partygoers identify which cup is theirs and minimize the need for extra cups. Depending on the type of cup or glass, here are some options I found for you on Amazon, to give you an idea what I mean:

  • Also, it sometimes works well to offer a marker at the drink station, so your guests can write their names on disposable cups. But be wary of permanent markers if the drinks station is near furniture, carpets, etc. that may accidentally be marked on by tiny, younger guests who drop the marker or don’t put the cap on.
  • Make sure to have a ladle for your spooky drink (not just a stirring spoon), so people can easily serve themselves. Ladles with a little notch on one side work particularly well and help keep the mess to a minimum.
  • No matter how great your serving ladle is, the party punch station always experiences a few drips and sloshes. Protect your table with a disposable or easily washable tablecloth (in festive colors and designs, of course!).
  • Depending on how long your party will last, you may want to have a back-up of decorative touches like your ice ring, so your non-alcoholic punch bowl will look just as fabulous halfway through the party as it did at the beginning.
  • To flip your party punch from a kiddie drink to a non-alcoholic option for an adult party, often all you need is some different garnishes or a change-up in the accompanying decorations. For example, instead of the whimsical gummy worms, candy corn or cute candy eyeballs you might use for a kid-friendly fun punch, switch to more gruesome and sinister floating ice skulls, offer accompanying “blood”-filled syringes for guests to shoot pomegranate juice or grenadine into their punch cups … that kind of thing.

Healthy Upgrades for Your Punch Recipes

When I was choosing the recipes to showcase in the collection above, of course I kept a keen eye out for punch recipes that were at least a bit on the healthier side – maybe with fruit juices instead of Hawaiian punch or lower-fat sherbet instead of full-fat ice cream.

But if you’re looking for ways to make your own punch recipes even lighter and healthier … and maybe a little less sweet (especially since there’s usually so much sugar flowing at a Halloween party!) … I’ve got some ideas that can help with calorie count and sugar content.

For one thing, you can try experimenting with swapping sparkling water in place of some of the ginger ale or lemon lime soda that are often used in punch recipes. It’ll affect the taste, of course, so you’ll want to make a small test batch prior to the party to make sure you like your new concoction. But, adults in particular may appreciate a less-sweet option.

Sorbets can also sometimes be swapped in for sherbets, if you’d like to have some flavorful little floating islands in your punch. But, be aware that sorbets won’t provide the same foamy, frothy layer as they melt (although they can add another, different flavor or color to the punch – maybe puddly, drippy areas of vampire-y blood-red color or eerie monster-green, for example).

Another alternative to sugar-y sherbet is to freeze 100% fruit juices into Halloween-themed ice molds and float those in your punch instead. Here are a few examples to get you thinkin’:

Only Need a Couple Drinks (and NOT a Whole Punch Bowl)?

Sure, big-batch punch recipes are ideal for large Halloween parties. But what if you’re simply celebrating with a couple of friends, or looking for a fun drink to make for your kiddos after Trick-or-Treating?

We’ve got just the thing! (Actually about 30 things!)

We’ve pretty much covered the gambit in putting this collection together – different types of desserts and treats, different flavor profiles, different skill levels.

But lots of them dig deep to utilize whole food ingredients, less refined sugar, healthier whole grains, or to be gluten free and allergy friendly … in addition to being vegan.

For people who value healthy eating – even at holidays and parties – there’s a whole lot of winning going on here today!

Pro Tip: Vegan Ingredients

I’ve got some helpful tips about vegan dessert ingredients at the end of this article, too. (You might be surprised at some common ingredients that aren’t actually vegan!)

But first, let’s get to the amazing list of recipes …….

Vegan Halloween Dessert Recipes

Vegan Candy and No-Bake Treats

Most of the vegan Halloween treats in this section use chocolate. So, remember to ensure that your brand of chocolate is vegan-friendly (many – but not all – are), as well as any added sugar or candy eyeballs.

Vegan Cupcakes, Cookies, Brownies and Cakes

Love baking? Then fire up the oven to bake up some Halloween fun! With a few clever ingredient swaps, vegan cupcakes and baked goods can be just as easy to make as their non-vegan counterparts. And surprisingly, you don't have to compromise on flavor and texture, either. Just check out these truly "bewitching" ideas!

More Spooky Dessert Ideas (Puddings and Beyond!)

We're not done yet, friends! Here are even more terrific ideas for plant-based desserts that celebrate Halloween in style!

As you scroll through the collection above and begin making your grocery list, I thought a few tips might be helpful – especially if you’re new to making vegan desserts.

Vegan Dessert Ingredients to Watch Out For

Tip #1: Be Careful About Sweeteners

The sweeteners you use in vegan desserts can get a little tricky.

First of all, remember that honey isn’t technically, strictly vegan.

Also, while many vegan recipes simply list “sugar,” you need to make sure that the type or brand of sugar you purchase is, indeed, vegan. Some sugar (specifically cane sugar) may be processed with bone char, a by-product of the meat industry, making it unacceptable to many people following a vegan diet. Raw sugars, beet sugars and organic sugars are good bets. Check out this handy Guide to Sugar for more deets about what to look for at grocery stores.

Tip #2: Other Common Ingredients to Double-Check

  • Chocolates (While dark chocolate frequently is vegan, milk chocolate and white chocolate typically aren’t. Before you head to the store in search of vegan chocolate chips, chocolate bark and other chocolate products, take a peek at this great guide on Vegan Chocolate Brands.)
  • Candy eyes and sprinkles
  • Food coloring
  • Rice Krispies (Kellogg’s isn’t considered vegan, but there are plenty of other brands that are.)

FAQs At-a-Glance

Can Honey Be Used in Vegan Desserts?

A lot of vegans don’t eat honey because it’s produced by insects (which are animals). Although the whole issue of honey has a bit of controversy surrounding it, strict vegans will opt for another similar sweetener, such as maple syrup.

Is Sugar Vegan?

Many kinds of sugar are, in fact, vegan. But some refined sugars, particularly those made from sugar cane, may be processed using animal bone char. This makes them unsuitable for a strict vegan diet. If you’re not sure, always double-check your brand and type of sugar until you find favorites you can rely on.

Are Vegan Desserts and Treats Healthy?

While many vegan desserts have health advantages over their “traditional” counterparts, remember that vegan butters and shortenings still have large amounts of problematic fats and calories, so use them sparingly when you can. Similarly, even if your brand of sugar is vegan, it’s still sugar … so all of the issues with diabetes, high caloric intake, blood sugar spikes, etc. still apply.

I’m so inspired by this collection of spooky vegan Halloween recipes!

So many monstrously WONDERFUL Halloween dessert ideas that just happen to vegan, too! Exactly what you need when you’re making treats for a group with a mix of dietary needs and eating styles.

~ Festive Halloween Fruit Kabobs are so simple to make! And they’re such fun for parties, after-school snacks, or to really dress up an October fruit tray. We’ve got lots of suggestions to customize them exactly the way you want, plus presentation ideas and delicious dips to serve ’em with, too! ~

This Recipe Is:     Ready in 30 Minutes or Less    Make Ahead    Vegan (and Vegetarian)    Gluten Free

Four kebabs at various angles on black background, with fruit cutout of a bat from a green honeydew melon.

Superheroes are everywhere at Halloween. All those tiny, kid-sized capes, Spidey masks, and Vibranium shields.

But does it sometimes feel like YOU are the biggest superhero of all? Using every parental superpower in the quest to fend off the candy attack?!?

*Kapow* take that, Snickers bar! *Shazam* back off, Skittles! *Kabam* see ya later, Twizzlers!

It can be tough to find creative, kid-appealing, HEALTHIER foods to help balance out all that processed sugar.

These Halloween Fruit Kabobs are a perfect secret weapon!

6 fruit kabobs piled on top of each other on a black tray.

They’re a cinch to make (we’ve got tips for ya in a sec), they can adapt to all sorts of Halloween-y themes and color schemes, and they’re just plain fun.

Fun enough to grab some of the spotlight that’s normally shining on the sugar-loaded candy bags!

Fun enough for a party.

And definitely fun enough for an extra-special after-school snack to power up your tiny superheroes before they head out to trick-or-treat (and get all that *ugh* candy)!

One word of warning, though: adults love these as much as kids do. Honestly, probably even more! So to really be a superhero, make sure you’ve got plenty of extras.

2 kabobs with fruit chunks and also cutout fruit shapes of a bat, pumpkins and ghosts.

Luckily, these are so darn easy, you don’t actually need a single superpower to make them! The kids will actually have a blast helping you, in fact.

Here’s all ya have to do:

How to Make Halloween Fruit Kabobs

These are basically just a riff on the Fruit Kabobs and Fruit Bouquets we originally taught you how to make almost 10 years ago (where does the time go?!?), and also on our summer-y Red, White and Blue Fruit Kabobs. The basic premise is entirely the same.

Step #1

Gather whatever fruit you’d like to use.

Below are some ideas for fruits that fit the obvious orange and black Halloween color scheme, plus fruits that come in green (the color of witches, frogs and Frankenstein!), yellow (the color of stars and a full moon), and white (because white goes with everything!).

Just some ideas to get you started. You can definitely stick with only orange and black, or pick and choose other colors to mix in however you please. Be creative and have fun!

Halloween-Colored Fruit

Orange Fruit

  • Clementine or tangerine sections
  • Cantaloupe or other orange melon
  • Mangoes

Black Fruit

  • Black grapes
  • Blackberries
  • Very dark blueberries

Green Fruit

  • Green grapes
  • Honeydew melon
  • Kiwi
  • Green apples

Yellow Fruit

  • Star fruit (which is naturally star-shaped, no cooke cutter needed!)
  • Pineapple
  • Golden kiwi

White Fruit

  • Some melons like canary melons and sometimes honeydews and crenshaws
  • Bananas

Once you’ve selected what you’d like to use, wash your fruit, and peel it (if needed).

Then, cut large fruit like melons into kabob-sized chunks.

Step #2 (Optional … but Super Fun!)

If you’d like to really pump up the “wow” level, you can use cookie cutters to make all sorts of spooky shapes out of large fruits, like planks of pineapple or slices of melons.

Amazon has about a gazillion Halloween, superhero, and fall-themed cookie cutters to choose from.

You can stick with classic Halloween shapes like bats, ghosts, stars and pumpkins (like we did in our photos). Or, you can branch out into cutters that match your kiddos’ costumes or your party theme.

And don’t forget … star fruit is automatically star-shaped, without any cookie cutter needed at all. (Ideal for topping fairy princess fruit wands, if you happen to have any little princesses running around this Halloween!)

Pro Tip: Making the Cutters Work Best

For the cutters to work well, I generally recommend that you slice the melon (or whatever fruit you’re using) into slabs that are about 1/2” thick.

Specifically, you always want the fruit slices to be just slightly thinner than the depth of your cookie cutters (so your cutters will easily be able to cut all the way through).

Step #3

Thread your fruit onto bamboo skewers, alternating the colors and types of fruit however you’d like.

That’s it! So enjoyable to make, and so very simple!

Serving Ideas

These spook-tacular fruit skewers are fantastic for:

  • after-school snacks
  • lunch box treats
  • a special addition to your Halloween morning breakfast
  • party fruit trays and grazing boards
3 skewers with fruit chunks, each topped with a Halloween shape (pumpkin, star and witch's hat).

Wanna REALLY Make These Fun??

You can easily (it truly IS easy … I promise!) turn your fabulous fruit skewers into a showstopper centerpiece! A fruit bouquet like you’d pay bucketloads of cash to order from one of those delivery places.

Ooooooh … fancy! (Now who’s REALLY a superhero? Hint: you, you, you!)

Simply follow our directions for How to Make a Fruit Bouquet!

How to Serve Your Spook-Tacular Kabobs

These are fresh, juicy and delicious straight-up, just as they are.

But, if you’d like to add a fruit dip alongside, we’ve got several great suggestions!

Serve your fruit kabobs next to our:

Or, for the very most ultimate Halloween-y presentation, go with our adorable Ghostly Halloween Fruit Dip (pictured below). It’s crazy-easy to make (again, no real superhero skills needed!), but it ratchets the fruity fun level up even higher still.

7 kabobs and fruit cutouts of a pumpkin and a bat, arranged on a black tray around white, ghost-shaped fruit dip.

No matter what you choose, you truly will feel a bit like a superhero … or at least a super parent … fending off some of the candy onslaught with these festive yet healthy kabobs!

FAQs At-a-Glance

How Long Do Fruit Kabobs Last?

Most fruits will hold up well for a day or two, wrapped in the fridge. The most notable exceptions are bananas, which don’t look terrific for very long once they’re peeled, and apples or pears which will begin to turn brown. Although you can try dabbing the apples and pears with a bit of lemon juice, I don’t love the flavor that adds. So, my recommendation is to wait to add any of those fruits until closer to serving time.

How Can Pointy Fruit Skewers Be Made Safer for Little Kiddos?

Start by snipping or snapping off the pointy end of each skewer, after you’re done adding fruit. In addition, it’s best to serve fruit skewers to little ones who are sitting down (just like running with scissors, kabob sticks and gadding about don’t mix well). Even better, once the kiddos have selected their enchanting fruit skewers, help them push off their fruit onto a plate before eating.

We’ve gotcha …

Where Can I Find Other Healthy Halloween Recipes?

Glad you asked!

So many terrific ideas for the most hauntingly spectacular, HEALTHY Halloween ever!

~ These festive Halloween fruit recipes are spooky-good alternatives to the never-ending flood of candy we’re hit with every October. They’re terrific, healthier options for October snacks, and for all those Halloween parties … with fun ideas that’ll appeal to kiddos and adults alike! ~

Collage showcasing five recipes with text overlay "31 Spooky Good Halloween Fruit Recipes Easy Yummy Healthy".

As Halloween rolls around each year, parents are once again faced with a tricky dilemma … how do we keep the celebrations fun, while limiting the sugar-y candy overload?

Whether those celebrations are for the kids, or for our own adult friends … the dilemma’s the same. At this time of year, there’s just too, TOO much sugar, and it never seems to end!

Ah, but it doesn’t have to be that way!

Yummy Fruit = Healthy Halloween Recipes!

There are oodles of creative ideas for pumping up the fun factor, while slashing the processed, junky sugar.

Fruit-filled recipes are a perfect solution, because the naturally occurring sugars in fruit help to keep things feeling sweet and indulgent. Yet fruits are leaps and bounds ahead of candy bars and all that processed junk, since they’re filled with fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, and lots of other “goodies”!

Sure, some of the recipes below still have a decadent coating of chocolate … or a sprinkling of festive, colored sugar. There’s still a little Halloween naughtiness here and there.

But featuring fruit as the main attraction in a recipe is a huge improvement over those Milky Way bars and Sour Patch Kids, no doubt!

Whether you’re looking for a quick after-school snack, a celebratory treat the kids can help you make, or a special recipe to take along to the next Halloween party … there’s sure to be a cute idea here you’ll love. And that you’ll truly feel great about sharing with people whose health and well-being you care about!

FAQs At-a-Glance

Is Pumpkin a Fruit?

Pumpkins are probably the absolute most iconic Halloween produce. But we often think of pumpkin as a vegetable. However, botanically speaking, pumpkin is actually a fruit because of how it grows, starting from a flower. (So, yep … you’ll see some pumpkin-based recipes in our list above!) Psssst … don’t forget that pumpkin seeds are terrific, healthy snacks, too. After you carve jack-o’-lanterns, you and your kids can try making roasted pumpkin seeds for extra Halloween fun in the kitchen!

What Fruits Are Great for Halloween?

Apples and pumpkins are both common harvest-season favorites, and as you can see in the list above, there are lots of ways to dress them up for Halloween! Other great bets are color-themed fruits in orange (like orange melons and clementines) and “black” (like blackberries, black grapes, raisins, and even really dark-hued blueberries). White and witch-green fruits feel appropriate this time of year, too – think of white melons or green grapes and kiwi.

What Are Good Dips to Go with Halloween-Themed Fruit?

I’m glad you asked! Besides the Ghostly Halloween Fruit Dip above, three we love are:
1) Peanut Butter Silk Pie Dip (mmmmm … especially yummy with autumn apples!)
2) 3-Ingredient Chocolate Dip
3) Healthy Sugared-Vanilla Yogurt Fruit Dip (which is basically our Ghostie Dip in a bowl – perfect in a little dish alongside your fruit creations!)

This Halloween, you’ve got options!

You can still create magical, spooky fun without always letting sugary treats like Reese’s cups and Snickers bars elbow their way to center stage.

Looking for healthy Halloween appetizer recipes? Then you’ve gotta try making this darling spider topper for your vegetable dip! Works with practically any dip, from ranch dip to hummus!

One of the very best things about Halloween is that it’s so purely creative. No need for expensive gifts or greeting cards or stressful obligations. Just fun and silliness – the more, the better!

And at my house, as much as we love dressing ourselves up for Halloween (ahem … just ask my husband’s coworkers about this!), we also can’t resist dressing up our food. Possibly the ultimate in Halloween silliness!

Remember some of our other Halloween creations?

They all make terrific Halloween party snacks or after-school treats, and they’re ideal edible party decorations for your serving table or buffet.

No doubt, you can definitely build one heck of a scary-good fruit platter with all those adorable guys! And when it comes to ghoulishly delightful fruit creations, we actually have an entire showcase collection of Halloween Fruit Recipes.

But … why should fruit have all the fun? How about some Halloween veggie love?

That’s where our spooky little spider comes in!

Cut from just one bell pepper, this Spooky Spider only takes about 5 minutes to make, and can even be made ahead of time!

Think Beyond the Ranch Dip

Our spider is perfect, perched on top of veggie dips, and makes a darling party centerpiece on a big vegetable tray. It’s also a terrific dip topper alongside whole-grain chips or crackers.

Works great for pretty much any dip, from ranch to hummus, as long as the dip isn’t too thin to keep the pepper pieces in place.

Since it’s Halloween, though, we especially like to go with a monster-colored green dip, for added spook-tacular effect. We photographed our spider with a simple Avocado-Ranch Dip, but our Edamame Hummus would be another great choice.

I could even see one of these spooky guys presiding over a 7-layer dip or a thick, hearty pot of chili. Remember: the fun is in being creative, so go for it!

And you don’t have to save this as a Halloween party idea, reserved only for big veggie platters or centerpieces. Surprise the kiddos after school with a “Spooky Spider” snack, and help them fuel up with something nutritious before they head out to fill their goody bags!

Tips for Making Your Spider

1) Choose the Right Pepper Shape – The best tip I can give you is simply to take an extra moment at the store or farm market, to choose a pepper that will just naturally become a spider’s body.

See the three peppers below? Waaaaay different, shapes, right?

The easiest way to quickly get a perfect spider body shape is simply to choose the right pepper at the market.

The pepper on the far right in the photo above was the ideal shape to become our little spider! By comparison, the one on the left is so bumpy and lobed, that it wouldn’t work nearly as well.

With the right pepper, it just takes one cut and … ta-da! … you’ve got a spider body. Easy!

If your pepper is the right shape, all you have to do to form the body of your Spooky Spider, is simply cut the bottom off the bell pepper!

But, if you find yourself with a pepper that isn’t quite the shape you’d like, don’t despair: you can also cut a spider-body-shape out of the large sidewall of your pepper (carefully, with a sharp paring knife). Really, though – it’s much easier to choose the right pepper from the start!

2) Select Your Pepper Color – Orange is the obvious Halloween color, but green would be eerily excellent, too. Bonus points if you can find a dark purply-black pepper!

3) Options for Your Spider’s Eyes – Tiny triangles cut from canned, sliced black olives work really well.

We used an olive slice to cut little triangles for the spider’s eyes.

Alternately, you could also try cutting the eyes from thin pieces of other dark veggies you’re using for your vegetable tray – maybe dark green peppers or a skin-on section cut from a cucumber or zucchini.

We find that just laying the little triangle eyes on top of the spider’s head is all that’s needed, but if your spider’s head is really domed, and the eyes keep falling off, you could also try using a teeny dab of your dip to help the eyes stay put.

From Garden Octopus to Spooky Spider … Another Option!

Here’s a fun little twist I just had to mention: this spider actually started out as an octopus … which is a clever adaptation for anyone who might be hosting an ocean-themed birthday party!

You see, back in August 2010, FamilyFun magazine featured a “Garden’s Octopus,” which turned a bell pepper into a “crunchy creature from the deep.” So cute! That octopus idea totally stole the show when my daughter, Amy, made it for my family’s annual “Fish-Off” Labor Day party, showcasing it on top of a fish-shaped platter loaded with crudités.

But as I gazed happily at her octopus centerpiece that day, I suddenly knew. What also has eight legs? Spiders! Yes! … a Halloween Pepper Spider needed to happen! With a few little tweaks to the original octopus body and eye shapes, the octopus-to-spider transformation was complete.

Don’t save this idea only for Halloween parties! It’s so quick to make, that you can easily whip it up as a fun Halloween snack for the kids after school. Perfect way to load them up with some veggies before they head out trick-or-treating!

But hey, no reason our spider can’t go right back to its watery octopus roots. Planning an under-the-sea Ariel extravaganza? Or how about a fun snack after taking the kids to your local aquarium? Well then … make a Pepper Octopus!

If you want to try it, I’d recommend that you ditch the spider’s triangle-shaped eyes and use friendly, round ones for your octopus. And don’t worry so much about body shape – an octopus can be all sorts of bump-ity body types! In fact, whereas our spider is cut to be pretty flat, the original FamilyFun octopus used about the bottom two-thirds of a pepper for the body, to give the octopus lots of height as it rose from the depths of the dip bowl … so virtually any pepper shape should work well for crafting an octopus.

From an octopus to a creepy, crawly, too-cute Halloween spider … plain-old bell peppers will never be quite the same, will they?!? Dress ’em up in fun and kid-appealing costumes, and watch those veggies disappear!

No doubt – this Halloween, you’ve just gotta get your pepper all jazzed up in a festive little spider costume. Spooky-good fun that’s healthy, too!

This idea is great for Halloween appetizer buffets, and it makes an adorable centerpiece on a giant vegetable platter – a great edible Halloween decoration for your party!

Happy Halloween, friends!

Spooky Spider Halloween Appetizer Dip

Spooky Spider Halloween Appetizer Dip

Yield: 1 spider
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

This Halloween appetizer dip recipe idea is so cute, so easy and works with any veggie dip you like (although we love it with scary-good GREEN dips). It’s fun to make, and really great for Halloween parties and appetizer buffets!

Ready in 30 Minutes or Less  •  Make Ahead    Vegan (and Vegetarian)    Gluten Free    Paleo

Ingredients

  • 1 orange bell pepper (a purple-black pepper would be great, too)
  • 1 sliced black olive

Instructions

  1. Cut the bottom off the pepper, to form the shape of the spider's body. (See note.)
  2. From the remaining sides of the pepper, cut 8 long, slender slices for the spider's legs.
  3. Cut two tiny triangles from the olive slice to form the eyes.
  4. Arrange the spider's body and legs on top of your appetizer dip (see note for dip suggestions). Then, lay the two triangle eyes into place. (As mentioned in the post, if your spider's head is slanted such that the eyes keep sliding off, you can try using a very tiny dab of dip to help hold the eyes in place.)
  5. Serve alongside vegetables or whole-grain crackers, as desired.

Notes

Spider body shape: As we show in the photos in the post above, choosing the right pepper at the market is key to getting a great "spider" body shape. However, if the bottom of your pepper doesn't have the right shape, you can also carefully use a sharp paring knife to cut a body from the sidewalls of the pepper.

Dip suggestions: This appetizer dip idea will work well with pretty much any type of dip, as long as it isn't so thin and runny that it can't keep the spider's body parts in place. We offer a number of ideas in the post above, but our favorite way to serve this is with a green dip (just because it looks more Halloween-y), such as our 5-Minute Avocado Ranch Dip (as you see in our photos) or our Edamame Hummus.

Make-ahead tips: You can cut out the pieces for your spider several hours or a day ahead. Wrap and store them in the refrigerator, so they're all ready to assemble on top of your appetizer dip. You can also place them on the dip ahead of time, but be careful that they aren't smashed down if you wrap or cover the dip to keep it fresh until serving.

This Halloween appetizer dip idea was adapted from FamilyFun magazine’s “Garden’s Octopus,” which appeared in the August 2010 issue. (Side note … after FamilyFun magazine changed hands in 2012, I can’t find an online link to the original article anywhere. If anyone knows where I can unearth it, feel free to shoot me the link so I can share it, as I always like to give props for our inspiration.)

~ Halloween treats can be healthy, too! These silly monster faces will be sure to make your kiddos giggle, and you’ll be thrilled with the nutritious snack they’re begging for during Halloween! Made with nut-free butter, these allergy-friendly Apple Monsters are perfect for class parties, too! ~

This Recipe Is:     Ready in 30 Minutes or Less    Vegetarian    Allergy-Friendly Nut-Free Options

Apple Monsters – An Allergy-Friendly, Healthy Halloween Treat! {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

These little monsters aren’t scary at all. Nope, nope, nope.

They’re pretty much anything except scary! These monsters are sweet, funny, silly, delicious …

Delicious?! Delicious monsters???

Oh yeah! Exceptionally yummy!

Apple Monsters – An Allergy-Friendly, Healthy Halloween Treat! {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

And ya wanna know what else? These Apple Monsters are also nut-free and allergy-friendly. And allergy-friendly = perfect for school parties!

It’s nearly Halloween, and all the little ghosties and goblins (or Darth Vaders and princesses!) will be prepping for the very first holiday party of the school year.

And you? Well, you’re probably helping out, because these elementary school years go by in the blink of an eye. Right? Those class parties are going to be ending by middle school, so there’s that leeeeettle pressure to sign up as a party parent while you still can.

Apple Monsters – An Allergy-Friendly, Healthy Halloween Treat! {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

We get it. Shelley and I are the.exact.same.way. We know how it goes.

There’s a finite number of opportunities to be that super-fun momma who has the coolest activities and most awesome crafts at the class party. But then there’s also that feeling that, with each passing year, you’ve gotta up your game!

So … you’ve no doubt been scouring Pinterest looking for spook-tacular fun! And also scary good snacks.

Of course you made our Apple Mummies and Frankenkiwis last year. Can you show up with the same thing this year? Hmmm … probably not. (However, if you didn’t make them last year – hop to it! Those little snacks are so cute! And tasty, too!)

You need new ideas. New fun. New awesome.

Apple Monsters – An Allergy-Friendly, Healthy Halloween Treat! {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}
You see how quickly these adorable (but never frightening!) monsters come together! So easy to make, so fun to eat! Simply chop the apples, smooth on some creamy nut-free butter, add puffed rice “teeth” and a red grape “tongue” before making green grape “eyes” – fast and healthy!

Well, you’ve come to the right place! But since Halloween pretty much means a total chocolate binge and an overload of sugar, Shelley and I just had to share another healthier treat that’ll have the kiddos AND the teachers AND the other party mommies all cheering with excitement!

Everyone will be oooohhhing and aaaaaahhhhhing and asking where, oh where, do you find the time to come up with these ideas?!? (And thanking you for creating something totally adorable that was also the one bright spot of nutrition in the whole candy-filled day!)

Since you’re spending so much time online searching for Halloween games, crafts and treats, you’ve no doubt seen plenty of ideas for snacks, but so many of them are just more, more, more sugar … on top of all the candy and other sugary sweets that already seem to go hand-in-hand with Halloween.

Even some of the treats that start with fruit … often just end with sugar (sugary marshmallows, frosting, cookie crumbs, sprinkles). Suddenly what should’ve been a healthy snack is … just not.

And so many of even the healthier snacks involve nuts and seeds that just aren’t allergy friendly for class parties or playgroups.

Apple Monsters – An Allergy-Friendly, Healthy Halloween Treat! {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

We’ve recently talked here on THK about how the schools in our town are so cautious about peanuts and tree nuts. While we’re still allowed to send foods with nuts in during lunch, all classrooms and sports practices are 100% nut free. So a nut-free spread was in order, and I knew nuts and even sunflower seeds were out, too.

I let the produce at the grocery store inspire me, stocked up on loads of fresh ingredients, and went to work.

It didn’t take long to create an adorable little guy who met our standards of being easy (just a couple minutes to make!), healthy, nut-free, delicious and FUN!

These funny faces will be a delight at the party (or as a cute afternoon snack!) and you’ll just pat yourself on the back knowing you provided a nutritious treat to balance out alllllllll that candy!

Apple Monsters – An Allergy-Friendly, Healthy Halloween Treat! {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

So go be that awesomesauce momma who has it all together! Snacks are taken care of! Now … what games can we play to the tune of “The Monster Mash”?!?

Apple Monsters

Apple Monsters

Yield: 8
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

These silly, nut-free apple monsters will be sure to make your kiddos giggle ... and you'll love how nutritious they are! Perfect for Halloween class parties!

Ready in 30 Minutes or Less    Vegetarian    Allergy-Friendly Nut-Free Options

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 1/3 cup, plus 2 teaspoons nut-free butter spread, divided (see note)
  • puffed rice cereal
  • 4 red grapes, each sliced vertically in half
  • 8 green grapes
  • 16 chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Quarter and core the apple, then quarter each piece again, so you have 16 thin wedges.
  2. Spread 1 teaspoon nut-free butter on each apple slice.
  3. Lay half of the apple slices on top of the other halves (matching up nut-free butter sides so the apple slices stick together), to create the "mouth."
  4. Push puffed rice "teeth" gently into the nut-free butter, all around the "mouth," leaving room to place a red grape "tongue" on the bottom slice of each "mouth."
  5. Place 1 red grape half in the center of each bottom slice to create the "tongue."
  6. To create the "eyes," slice the ends off the green grapes, then cut each grape in half horizontally. (If your grapes are exceptionally large, you may get more than two "eyes" out of each one.) Using the tip of the knife, make a small slit in the top of each grape half, then place a chocolate chip, pointy-end down, into the grape, pushing the point of the chocolate chip into the slit you cut.
  7. Place 2 small dollops of nut-free butter on the top portion of each "mouth," then gently press a grape "eye" onto each dollop.
  8. Enjoy immediately, or store in the refrigerator for an hour or two before serving.

Notes

Nut-free butter: We chose WowButter (a soy-based, nut-free product), but you could also substitute a peanut-free sun butter (made from sunflower seeds). Alternately, if nut allergies aren’t a concern, you can use regular peanut butter.

I have no idea exactly how this idea came to me.

Gretchen and I were on the phone. (Well, let’s be honest here … most hours of most days, Gretchen and I are on the phone … or texting … or emailing … or thinking about talking, texting and emailing … but that’s entirely beside the point!)

We were brainstorming ideas for new fall recipes, and I suddenly pictured a yummy white fruit dip, spread artfully on a serving platter in the shape of a spooky Halloween ghost! How fun would that be!?!? And it could be surrounded by Halloween-colored fruits and cute fruit cut-outs. So easy and absolutely darling!

Maybe we could start with our Healthy Sugared-Vanilla Yogurt Fruit Dip (it’s one of the most crazy-popular recipes we’ve ever posted) … and go from there.

Good in theory …

Ha! Turns out, it’s good awesome in reality, too!

I have to be very up front here, and admit that this was much easier, much more successful than Gretchen and I had ever imagined. It seriously worked perfectly on the very first go … and on the second …

It worked like a charm! A very quick, very easy, very yummy charm.

Just the way we like it here at THK!

Just 3 ingredients! A quick, easy, healthy fruit dip – perfect for Halloween parties and fall snacks! It's a delicious appetizer dip AND a party decoration! | www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com
It’s so fun and really easy to serve cute fruit cut-outs with your ghosty, like our honeydew bats and cantaloupe pumpkins! We’ve got an entire post with loads of great tips for making fruit cut-outs and kabobs … check it out!

You might remember my story of the day my daughter and I had ourselves a little Halloween party in the kitchen and whipped up all sorts of crazy-creative, monstrously cute Halloween foods. That’s the day I tried my hand at Apple Mummies and Frankenstein Kiwis. It’s also when I started playing around with this Ghostly Fruit Dip.

I thought it might take a lot of tinkering to get a ghosty who was the right consistency and tasted great. Nope! The kitchen gods were smiling on me that day (well, probably laughing at me … but whatever!). My concoction was spook-tacular-ly perfect on the first try! Geez … I love when that happens!

This is beyond-easy! I’m talking three ingredients (plus chocolate chip eyeballs!) and maybe two minutes, start to finish, to make this dip. (And I’ve generously factored in enough time for a leisurely cup of coffee, in addition to the time it’ll take you to stir three ingredients together).

A quick wave of your magic wand rubber scraper to artfully spread your dip into a ghosty shape (again … not hard, especially since a ghost can be pretty much any sorta-roundish shape), and voilà!

Just 3 ingredients! A quick, easy, healthy fruit dip – perfect for Halloween parties and fall snacks! It's a delicious appetizer dip AND a party decoration! | www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com
Super-fast ideas for fruit to serve with your ghosty dip include bunches of grapes (festively colored green and black grapes, of course!) and the most autumn-y fruit of all … apples!

So … fruit for dipping? You’ve got options. Lots of ’em actually.

  • First, you can forego the fruit and just lick your ghosty right off the platter when no one’s looking. (It’s that good, and we’re not here to judge.)
  • If you wanna be just a little more couth and share your ghosty dip with others, you can simply surround your creation with piles of gorgeous fresh fruit. Whatever looks good at the market! That’s definitely the quickest, easiest option for a last-minute Halloween party tray that’ll take just minutes to make but will still knock their socks off!
  • To really make your fruit tray feel Halloween-y, though, we definitely recommend choosing fruits in black, orange, white and green. Think of green or black grapes, orange cantaloupe and clementines, green/white honeydew, and green kiwi. White bananas are also a good thought, but because they turn brown rather quickly, you’ll want to wait to slice those up right before serving.

Just 3 ingredients! A quick, easy, healthy fruit dip – perfect for Halloween parties and fall snacks! It's a delicious appetizer dip AND a party decoration! | www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com

  • To take those Halloween-colored fruits to the next festive level, simply thread some of them on skewers! We’ve got a whole tutorial on how to make awesome fruit skewers and fruit kabobs that’ll set you up perfectly!
  • And, if you’re feeling really creative (and gunning to be the headliner at the Halloween bash), you can use Halloween cookie cutters to make cut-outs from fruit like honeydew and cantaloupe! For some key tips on that, check out our post on Halloween Fruit Kabobs.

No matter how you serve it, we can pretty much guarantee that this ghost will disappear before your very eyes!

Ghostly Halloween Fruit Dip Recipe – (Yet Another!) Healthy Halloween Treat {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

Hope this is your very best, most delicious (and healthiest!) Halloween yet!

Ghostly Halloween Fruit Dip – (Yet Another!) Healthy Halloween Treat

Ghostly Halloween Fruit Dip – (Yet Another!) Healthy Halloween Treat

Yield: 1 cup
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Just 3 ingredients! A quick, easy, healthy fruit dip – perfect for Halloween parties and fall snacks! Delicious as BOTH an appetizer dip AND a party decoration!

Ready in 30 Minutes or Less  •  Make Ahead    Vegetarian    Gluten Free

Ingredients

  • 1 cup nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons packed brown sugar (see note)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons honey
  • 3 chocolate chips (for the ghost's face)
  • assorted fruit, for serving (see note)

Instructions

  1. Mix yogurt, brown sugar, and honey together in a medium bowl.
  2. Using a flexible rubber scraper, spread the yogurt dip onto a serving platter in the shape of a ghost. (Don't worry about being too precise – ghosts come in all sorts of amorphous, blobular shapes!)
  3. Place the chocolate chips, pointy ends down, into the dip, positioned as "eyes" and a "mouth."
  4. Serve with assorted fruit.

Notes

Brown sugar: As we've mentioned in other recipes, different brands of vanilla Greek yogurt vary significantly in the amount of sugar they contain and how sweet or tart they taste, which can cause variances in how much brown sugar you’ll want to add to this recipe. We find that 3 tablespoons of brown sugar in this recipe is a good middle ground, but you can certainly adjust that slightly according to your tastes and how sweet or tart your vanilla Greek yogurt is. We don't recommend adjusting the honey, however, as the flavor of honey helps to counterbalance the telltale tart flavor of Greek yogurt, so we specifically recommend using the 1 1/2 teaspoons called for here.

Make-ahead options: You can make this dip even a day or two before you're going to shape and serve your ghost. Store the dip, in a covered container, in the fridge. Alternately, you can shape the ghost ahead of time, as well. But, be careful when covering it with plastic wrap to ensure that the wrap doesn't directly touch the yogurt and mess up your perfectly darling ghost. (If that happens, though ... don't despair. Just grab a flexible scraper and re-contour your ghost dip to smooth everything back out! Easy!)

Fruit: This dip is delicious with pretty much any type of fruit, but for Halloween, we recommend choosing fruit in festive colors such as black, orange, white, and green (green and black grapes, orange cantaloupe and clementines, green/white honeydew, green kiwi, etc.). Also, to make your presentation really fun, you might want to try making fruit cut-outs or kabobs. We've got lots of tips on doing that in our post on How to Make Fruit Kabobs and DIY Fruit Bouquets.

~ These Franken-kiwis are an easy, really cute, healthy Halloween treat! And so fun to make – like yummy little Halloween craft projects! They’re perfect for Halloween fruit trays, fun after-school snacks, and as edible Halloween party decorations! ~

A couple of weeks ago, on a lazy Sunday, I threw a little (pre-) Halloween party.

The key word here is little … it was just my daughter and me! (Isn’t it seriously the best when your tiny babies begin to grow up into real, whole, independent people … and it turns out that, not only do you love them beyond belief, but you also really like the people they’ve become and totally enjoy hanging out with them?!? Yay – score one for parenthood! 😀 )

So anyway … this two-person party …

I’d just finished my mad-scientist experiments with Apple Mummies (a raging success, so I was feeling highly motivated and adventuresome!).

Frankenstein Kiwis Recipe – (Another!) Healthy Halloween Treat {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}As I peered in the vegetable crisper (oooooh … the possibilities …) and the fruit drawer (even more possibilities there!), I knew just the person to join me in my Halloween-foodie-experimentations (aka my party). My daughter is amazingly creative, so I figured that if she couldn’t help me turn fruits and veggies into monstrously spook-tacular eats … well, probably nobody could!

We started the festivities by cutting up some leftover Apple Mummy apples and dipping them in Sugared-Vanilla Fruit Dip and Peanut Butter Silk Pie Dip. Mmmmmmm … every party should begin with good munchies!

And then we were ready to really get our Halloween-party-meets-mad-scientist-laboratory going!

After you’ve cut one end off your kiwi so your little monster will sit flat, use a vegetable peeler to remove the fuzzy skin from about the bottom two-thirds of the kiwi. As you get near the top, pull the skin away in little jaggedy bits, so that it looks like Frankenstein’s spooki-liciously messy hairdo!

While she carved fruit and turned tiny tomatoes into spiders, I poked around in the fridge, hoping to find even one limp stalk of celery. I could just imagine that celery (being green, ya know) could somehow become Frankenstein’s monster.

Sadly, no celery.

Hmmmmmmm …

Frankenstein Kiwis Recipe – (Another!) Healthy Halloween Treat {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

But wait! Also green … a kiwi! Ok – I’d work with that!

My first problem was what to use for hair. What would I use??? (Please don’t laugh at me. I really and truly thought about that for a moment.)

Oh, right (slaps forehead)! Kiwis come with hair!

Once I’d worked through that little mental hurdle, the rest was a breeze! I’ve pretty much always got some pretzel sticks milling around in the pantry. Perfect! And, those mini chocolate chips and dried wild blueberries I’d used for mummy eyeballs looked like they’d work perfectly for my little Frankensteins, too! In a couple minutes flat, I had a Franken-kiwi!

And thus, our little party progressed, as my daughter and I gleefully raided the fridge and tried all sorts of Halloween-inspired snack creations (some more successful than others). By the time our other late-arriving partygoers showed up (that would be my son … remember, it was a small party!), we had cute, healthy monsters and ghosties galore!

And yeah – thanks to that fun little afternoon hanging with my daughter in the kitchen, I’ve got a few more Halloween treats to share with you, too! As in, you might want to check back this Thursday … and again next Halloween …  and maybe even the year after that …

Frankenstein Kiwis (Healthy Halloween Treats)

Frankenstein Kiwis (Healthy Halloween Treats)

Yield: 1 kiwi Frankenstein
Prep Time: 7 minutes
Total Time: 7 minutes

An easy, really cute, healthy Halloween snack! Perfect for Halloween fruit trays, fun after-school snacks, and as edible Halloween party decorations!

Ready in 30 Minutes or Less    Includes Make-Ahead Steps    Vegetarian

Ingredients

  • 1 kiwi
  • 2 pretzel sticks (and thicker "dipping sticks," if desired)
  • 2 mini chocolate chips or dried wild blueberries

Instructions

  1. Slice one end off the kiwi, so the kiwi sits upright and flat.
  2. Beginning at the cut end of the kiwi, use a vegetable peeler to remove some of the kiwi's fuzzy skin. As you get toward the top third of the kiwi, pull the kiwi's skin away in little jagged bits so that the skin remaining at the top of the kiwi will look like messy Frankenstein hair.
  3. For the mouth: Break a pretzel stick into a small piece (roughly about 1/2" to 3/4" long), and gently push that piece lengthwise into your kiwi to make a mouth.
  4. For the bolts: Break another pretzel stick (or a thicker pretzel "dipping stick") so you have two end pieces that are each about 1/2" long. Shove those into your kiwi (broken end first), one low on each side of your kiwi, to form the bolts in your Frankenstein's neck.
  5. For the eyes: Use two chocolate chips or two dried wild blueberries for eyes, gently pushing each into position above the pretzel mouth.

Notes

Make ahead: These Franken-kiwis stay fresh-looking for several hours if kept in the fridge, all except for the pretzel components, which start to get just a little soggy after an hour or two. So, if you'd like to make these ahead of time (for a fruit tray, Halloween party platter, etc.), we recommend that you wait to add the mouth and bolts to your Frankensteins until closer to party time.

~ These adorable Apple Mummies are such an easy, healthy Halloween treat! Your little ghosties will gobble them up! A perfect fruit snack for Halloween parties, spook-tacular fruit trays, or a fun October after-school nibble! ~

Apple Mummies Recipe … A Healthy Halloween Treat {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

The other day, my son was at the kitchen sink, peeling apples for a recipe he was making (we’ll talk about that later, wink wink). I was sitting at the breakfast bar, trying hard to seem as though I wasn’t watching over him (although … ahem … I might have been watching just a little).

As he worked, the strips of brightly colored apple peel fell into the sink.

“You know, this kinda looks like …” he suddenly said.

And actually, I did know! I knew exactly what he was thinking, before he’d even finished his sentence!

The apple he was peeling (in the messy, haphazard way only a 12-year-old boy could possibly manage to peel an apple) looked kinda like … a mummy!

Apple Mummies Recipe … A Healthy Halloween Treat {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}

It was so obvious!

“You should …” he began again.

But I was right there with him! Yes, I should! I should totally share this idea on THK!

So that’s what I’m doing!

When I tried this little project myself a couple of days later, I wanted to be sure that it really was easy … and that someone who is completely lacking in art skills (notice that I am not mentioning my own name here!) could actually use a veggie peeler to make an apple look like a mummy.

Apple Mummies Recipe … A Healthy Halloween Treat {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}
Before grabbing the peeler to “mummify” your apple, use a paring knife to remove the core.

The very first Apple Mummy I tried to make was adorable … and so was the second! I texted Gretchen a picture, and she was thrilled with how cute they were, and absolutely agreed these Apple Mummies would be just perfect for THK! (Score! I guess we hit the “Easy Button” on this one!)

This definitely is THK-easy! If I can do it (on my first try!), you for sure can, too!

And just imagine how excited your kids will be when these spook-tacular mummies show up as their after-school snack this Halloween season! Or on a fruit tray for the Halloween party! Or as the healthy treat at an October playgroup! Or …

Ok, I think you get the picture! They’re cute no matter what you do with them! And so nutritious, too!

Apple Mummies Recipe … A Healthy Halloween Treat {www.TwoHealthyKitchens.com}
To turn this yummy, healthy Halloween snack into an over-the-top treat, serve your mummies with Peanut Butter Silk Pie Dip (an apple’s best friend – really!) or Sugared-Vanilla Fruit Dip. Mummies love ’em … and your kiddos will, too!

A couple little hints before you get started making mummies faster than an ancient Egyptian:

  • Some apples turn brown (due to oxidation) much more quickly than others after they’ve been peeled. Sure, there are various tricks (soaking in an acidic liquid like water with lemon juice, etc.) to keep apples looking fresh longer, but we’re generally in too much of a hurry for that! We just recommend that if you’re going to use these Apple Mummies to decorate a fruit tray or as a snack at a party, choose apples that don’t turn brown quite as quickly. Granny Smiths, for example, generally start to brown almost immediately, while Pink Ladies and Honeycrisps can sit out for hours and still look pretty fresh.
  • We love serving our Apple Mummies with a healthy fruit dip! Try noshing on mummies with our Healthy Sugared-Vanilla Yogurt Fruit Dip and our Peanut Butter Silk Pie Dip with Greek Yogurt. Both dips require only four super-common ingredients and take about five minutes (tops!) to whip up … but they’ll make you look like mom of the year when served with your perfectly sculpted mummies!

Oh – and one more thing. About that recipe my son was making with his peeled apples at the beginning of this post? Mmmmhmmm … stay tuned … ’cause it’s a really good one that even a kid can make! 😀

Apple Mummies – A Healthy Halloween Treat!

Apple Mummies – A Healthy Halloween Treat!

Yield: 2
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

These adorable Apple Mummies are so easy, and a really healthy Halloween treat! A perfect fruit snack for parties, fruit trays, or an everyday treat!

Ready in 30 Minutes or Less    Vegetarian (and Vegan Option)    Gluten Free    Paleo Option

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 4 mini chocolate chips or dried blueberries

Instructions

  1. Cut apple in half vertically and carefully remove the core.
  2. Starting at one edge, use a vegetable peeler to remove haphazard strips of apple peel.
  3. Lay each apple half on a plate or serving tray and press two eyes into the apple in an area where the peel has been removed. If you're using mini chocolate chips, push the pointy end in first. If you're using dried blueberries, it may help to use a paring knife to make a tiny divot in the apple where you want each eye to go, and then gently press the blueberry eyes in.

Notes

Apple varieties: Some apples (such as Granny Smith) tend to turn brown more quickly than others after they've been cut. If you need your apples to look fresh for a while (on a fruit tray for a Halloween party, for example), you may want to choose apples that don't turn brown quite as quickly (such as Pink Ladies and Honeycrisps).
