Hi, Jane! As I mention in step #2, if needed, I would spray the pan with cooking spray and/or lightly but thoroughly flour the bottom of the pan. If you’d prefer to butter the pan, I’m sure that would probably work just fine, too. Let me know what you think – I hope you’ll love these Date Sticks as much as we do! Hi, Jannel! I just grab a package of standard grocery store dates like Sun-Maid, which do happen to be deglet noor. So yep … deglet noor should work just fine for these date bars. It is very tasteful and very light and less calories than all other similar recipes. The whole wheat and the one tablespoon of butter makes it a healthier dessert. My mom was from Ohio as well. And she carries this one and so many other recipes whereever she moved to. This recipe is so good. Like your mom as a girl of rolling the bars in the powered sugar, I to had this job to. We were lucky if we had any left over from the first batch. So mom always made a double batch.
